Introducing Dr Matthew Parrott, the Dean as of September 2026...
Can you tell us a little bit about your role?
As the Dean, I oversee the work of the Decanal Team, which has responsibility for non-academic disciplinary matters. The team has responsibility for looking after our students (Junior and Middle Common Rooms) and works in parallel with, but separately from, the Welfare Team. The Decanal Team ensures the enforcement of the College Code of Discipline.
What led you to become Dean?
The Dean’s role is to ensure that the College is a safe, inclusive, and supportive community, a place where everyone feels welcome and secure. I believe that this makes the college an environment in which every student can flourish and pursue their dreams. I feel honoured to have this position.
What is the best thing about your job?
Being Dean allows me to have a lot of regular working relationships with many of our students, and not just when they misbehave! I also get to hear about many of the exciting events and activities taking place at St Hilda’s.
What else do you do at St Hilda’s?
I am also a Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy and an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Faculty. I regularly offer tutorials in several papers in Philosophy, both for first-year students and for Finals. I also have an active research programme in philosophy of mind and cognitive science.
What do you enjoy most about working at St Hilda’s?
The people. We have the best group of people in Oxford, and I am fortunate to have such amazing colleagues in so many different roles. Also, the grounds of St Hilda’s are beautiful!
Favourite film
I recently thoroughly enjoyed Project Hail Mary. I found it striking to feel such a strong emotional attachment to a rock.
Favourite book
A Swim in a Pond in the Rain by George Saunders
Anything else we should know?

I’m always happy to help and if I can’t help directly, I’ll be able to point you to someone who can.
