LATE SCHUBERT IV
Rebecca Clarke: Poem (Adagio) for String Quartet (1926)
Haydn: String Quartet in Bb major, op. 76/iv, “Sunrise” (1797)
William Alwyn: String Quartet No. 9, "Romeo & Juliet” (1931)
Schubert: Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, “Trout” (1819)
In this concert inaugurating the last part of the Villiers Quartet’s three-year Late Schubert series, the quartet are joined by two outstanding Oxford students, Alexander McNamee and Emily Chambers, for a rendition of Schubert’s well-loved ‘Trout’ Quintet. A similar sense of lyricism pervades the other pieces in the programme, in particular the wonderful Alwyn Ninth Quartet, inspired by the Romeo’s death scene in Act 5 Scene 1 of Shakespeare’s play, "Romeo & Juliet” and which was first recorded by the Villiers Quartet in 2020.
